Teacher's Notes

These exercises and activities are for students to use independently of the teacher to practice number properties.

Fractions stages 7 to 8.

These activities can be used to follow the teaching episodes based on, **Book 7, pages 38 and 39** and are for those students who are able to use the associated number properties.

### Prior knowledge. Students should be able to:

- Work with fraction strips

### During these activities, students will meet:

- Addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators

### Background

In different resource books working with fractions is placed at different stages. Problems with like denominators are certainly at a lot lower level than stage 8. Book 8 would suggest stage 5, but since students at that stage have just learned part whole strategies and are only dealing with small numbers for this, it seems harsh to suddenly "change the rules of addition" for them. Working on symbols like this thus seems to logically fit at stage 6.
