Welcome to the Algebra area of the nzmaths website.
This section of the nzmaths Web-site provides you with units of work for Levels 1 to 4 of the Algebra Strand of "Mathematics in the New Zealand Curriculum".
The goal of all our units, both here and in the other strands, is to produce children who are able to think mathematically and are confident and comfortable with the mathematics they are using. Throughout these units, and those in Geometry, Measurement and Statistics, a problem solving approach to the teaching has been adopted.
Our units are really mini-units in the sense that they are designed for a single week. We imagine that as a teacher you might want to combine 2 or 3 of our mini-units to form a substantial unit of algebra for your class.
The structure of the units can be found under Unit Structure.
The units are linked to the levels and achievement objectives from “Mathematics in the New Zealand Curriculum". They are linked into a single learning sequence which combines the two “threads” of algebra, namely, patterns & relationships, and equations. By clicking on the relevant word you can find details of the learning sequence for each curriculum level.
For more information on the progression of mathematical learning in the Algebra strand you may want to try the Algebra Curriculum Exemplar.
